LCD needs back light to produce light. So it cannot truly give black color but only grey. Plasma does not need back light but each dot produce light and color by itself when electricity goes through it. So it can give true black when there is no light going through it. In this sense, LCD uses more electricity than Plasma as its backlight has to be on all the time. The contrast ratio of Plasma is also better than LCD. LCD viewable angle can only be up to around 176 degrees whereas Plasma is viewable from any angle. LCD dots are smaller so it can normally give higher resolution and more detail picture than Plasma. And therefore normally smaller size TVs are made of LCD panel. Plasma can be very reflective if it faces strong light whereas it is not a problem to LCD. The production cost of LCD is much cheaper than Plasma and therefore the LCD TV is chaper than Plasma TV.
