Think about finding the image of a shape using a pantograph with scale factor 2, and then finding the image of that image with a scale factor 3 pantograph.

How are the original shape and the final image related with respect to lengths? With respect to areas?

Let L be the length of the original shape.

- From original shape to the first image, since scale factor is 2,
therefore, the length has been doubled, length of the first image = 2L
- From first image to final image, since scale factor is 3,
therefore, the length has been tripled, length of the final image = 2L*3 = 6L

With respect to lengths, the original shape : the final image = 1 : 6

With respect to areas, the original shape : the final image = 1² : 6² = 1 : 36
