There are some hidden folders such as Application Data, Local Settings and minor folders.
If you cannot view these folders, try to change the option by:-
(a) select [T]ools
(b) select Folder [O]ptions
(c) select VIEW tab (second tab)
(d) change from DONOT display to DISPLAY hidden folders and files
(e) click [confirm/ok]
Try to inspect these directories/folders to see if they are the ones that used up over 60GB storage.
Before anythings to be performed, use IE option to delete "Temporary Internet Files".
Next, use the "add/remove software program" in the control panel. Look for those softwares that are no longer in use and tick to remove them.
If your PC is shared with other persons, then there is a higher chance you got plenty leftover files created by previous users. Most common files are Outlook Express (email) mailbox files or Outlook files, they are often BIG.
C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities
Check if the above folders altogether occupying a lot of space.
If yes, then try to remove those not used by you. HOW?
-- 1. open Outlook Express
-- 2. right click the Inbox
-- 3. click [R] properties
-- 4. the folder path name {xxxxxx} is the one USED by YOU.
Then other folders {yyyyyyyyy} are NOT used by you and can be removed.
Similarly if it is Outlook, the files are located at:
C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
See if there are any .pst files NOT in used by you (see the file timestamp).
Next, the possible suspect is at the Application Data sub-folders. This may be resulted from improper uninstallation/removal of software which caused a lot of files remained there. Try use the SuperScan software to detect the junk files.
