What is your purpose of buying this lens?
As a general walk-around lens, it's a value buy. Here are the pros and cons I read from internet:
Pros:
- soild built
- small
- f2.8 constant (but ... see cons below)
- short focusing distance to allow some close-up shoots
- not expensive comparing to Canon's 28-70mm L f2.8, but what you get is what you pay
Cons:
- very soft wide open, need to stop down to at least f4 to get sharp pictures
- so-so image quality
- loud autofocus
- flare not well controlled, yellow cast
As a walk-around lens, Tamron 17-55mm f2.8 XR Di II is a very good alternative.
If you intend to do macro photography, you should consider real macro lens (1:1) since this Sigma not a true macro lens.
