Since you are using it at home, weight it NOT a big issue during selection.
I would recommend Dell InspironTM 1501 price $5,288 (discounted $1,700 already)
It is good for everyday use as it has Dual-core CPU, 1GB memory, 15.4" big LCD, 120GB storage with DVD writer. Promotion until 21/5/2007.

Other choices are NOT as good as Dell's configurations, they are:-
Compaq Presario V3100 (V3113AU) $5,480
(Sempron , 512MB ram, 80GB harddisk, DVD writer, 14" LCD)
Compaq Presario C500 (C502TU) $4,780
(Celeron 1.7 , 512MB ram, 80GB harddisk, DVD/CD combo, 15.4" LCD)
HP & IBM notebooks (new models) starting from almost $7,000 onwards
Fujitsu Lifebook are very nice ones but as expensive as IBM (Leveno)
other brands are BenQ, NEC, Samsung, etc...
