to be found其實是一種筆法，是用了to不定詞，英文叫to-infinitive，所謂to-infinitive是to+原形動詞(如:am,are和is等等的原形動詞是be)，to-infinitive有很多的功用，１）它可以用作名詞，２）形容詞，３）副詞，而根據它們的功用，分別稱為名詞不定詞、形容詞不定詞、副詞不定詞。如
１）To known oneself is difficult（名詞不定詞）
２）There is nothing to be seen.（形容詞不定詞）
３）I went to see him(副詞不定詞to see是修飾went)
現在回到你的句子，the dog is nowhere to be found
這句的is並不是”是”的意思，而是”在”的思意
而nowhere在這裏也不是作名詞用，而是作副詞用”任何地方都不”的意思
而to be found就作一個副詞不定詞，用來修飾nowhere這個副詞，是表明任何地方都找不到（用be是因被動語氣，the dog是被找尋的）
所以，全句就是：那隻狗任何地方（哪兒）也找不到

In the winter break I went nowhere, just stayed at home.

那本詞典哪兒也找不到。
當然the dog is nowhere can be found，因為nowhere並非關係代名詞，can be found又不能作副詞用，所以這句子就變成有兩個主動詞，這就錯了。
can之後不可以用is，而必須用be；因為所有助動詞之後，都要用原形動詞。
yet：yet未必一定要放在最後，你可以說：I have not yet finished.
the dog had gone...：因為你說it can not be found，這句已表明直到現在也未曾尋回那隻狗，所以gone這個動作的果效還在生效，因此不可以用past perfect tense，而要用present perfect tense: The dog has gone and it cannot be found
若你說：The dog had gone and I could not be found yesterday.這句的意思是（狗走了，直到昨日都未能尋回牠──但卻暗示了現今牠已被尋回）
