Diabetes


Your body needs energy to do its job. You need energy to work, to play and even to breathe. Your body gets that energy from food that you eat. To convert food into glucose, a simple form of sugar that the body can use, your body uses a chemical called insulin.

People who have diabetes cannot produce enough insulin to help them convert food into sugar. Some diabetics can't make any insulin at all. There are two types of diabetes. Children who have diabetes usually suffer from type 1 while adult diabetics usually have type 2 diabetes. Nobody is sure what triggers the disease, but diabetes is not contagious—you cannot catch the disease from another person.

People who have diabetes usually need to inject themselves with insulin every day because their bodies cannot make enough insulin. Some patients even have to test the levels of glucose in their blood throughout the day. That way they know how much insulin they need. Diabetic children normally need to inject insulin between two and four times a day.

Sometimes people inject too much insulin and their blood sugar levels drop too low. If this happens they need to eat something sweet like chocolate.
