YES! If you don't get them sharpened, you'll eventually have no edges on your blade . . . you'll slip and slide and wonder why the heck you're not skating well.

Yes, they need to be sharpened. If you're a regular skater is every six weeks, but it depends on how often you skate. Bring your skates to the shop in the rink, they can usually tell you by looking at your blades.

There're also 2 kind of edges, for recreation or competitive edges. Ask the shop they'll tell you what you need.

Blades typically need a sharpening every 20-40 hours of skating. I think the sales lady was hoping to make bit more money off of sharpenings and new blades(once you ran out of sharpenings). 8-10 hours is almost nothing unless you have reallllly cheap blades. Since you have mystique it's most likely the blades are mark IV and will need a sharpening every 20-40hours. I haven't had mystiques but, i am a jackson user and am using freestyles right now. I know that if the skates fit your feet perfectly it shouldn't take too long until they feel comfortable. I was lucky, after about 2hours of skating they were instantly comfortable and i was back up to my level. Usually it will take much longer like 12-32 hours of skating to break in skates. With jackson mystiques there would be no reason to heat mold them because the break in would be so fast. The heels aren't made of wood. They have a wood appearance but are not wood, they are leather. She obviously does not know anything about what she is doing. True, usually mystiques heels are made from plastic since they are a recreational skate, but no skate had wood heels. If the wood got wet, it would easily absorb water and start rotting. I hope she fitted you right since she is not a knowledgeable skate fitter!

Yes. Without sharpening blades they would be to dull. Even hockey blades need to be sharpend so the skater can move faster on the ice withoud falling.

Yes. Eventually you wear down the sharp edges so they have to be sharpened, if you don't have them sharpened then it will affect your skating.

Yes, all ice skate blades need to be sharpened. The only skates that don't need sharpening are the old-school double blade skates (Which I don't recommend!!)
You can decrease the amount of sharpening that your skates need by taking a few precautions:

Wear skate guards when you aren't on the ice
If you don't have guards, make sure that you stay on the rubber mats at the rink or carpets at home.
Don't step on concrete, linoleum, dirt or wood with your skates on and no guards. These will kill your edges and reduce the life of your blades.

I hope this info helps!

Yes, but they dont have to be every month. the average is 6 weeks but it varies from 4-8 weeks depending on how much you skate.
Hope this helps

yes, all ice skate blades have to be sharpened (unfortunately!). how often depends on how much you skate. I don't know exactly how long you can skate between sharpenings because I've heard different opinions. but I've had mine about 6 months, skating 4-6 hours per week, and they haven't needed to be sharpened yet.

hope this helps and good luck with your skating!
