by train - about 1 hr and 20 mins. In LDN train central station, you can take metro to train station, but mind changing lines, it's quite confusing for some interchange stations. The train station's very modern, at least better than domestic airport. But have to notice the board of any delay or change of schedule and platform.
domestic flight - not very good choice, as questions like you go from large airport in LDN to L (domestic airport), or will you go to domestic airport in LDN to L? If you find some cheap tickets with Easyjet o Ryanair, like at 1 pound, then go for it, but mind the baggabe clerance in liverpool, remember it's a domestic airport only. if you're used to modern international airport, i suggest you take train.
Not sure if HK has direct flight to Liverpool, but Europe does, it's budget airlines, to and from Belgium the nearest.
check it out : easyjet.com / ryanair.com
but remember the budget airline's no frill service, you may be scared by their impoliteness and strong authority or some senior flight attendants.

Ah, sorry, as you're on business trip, then treat yourself better. Take a smoothest way. But if you will have some time for touring or shopping, then HK-LDN-LPL-LDN-HK or HK-LPL-LDN-HK
