For entry level, the most popular DSLRs in the market:
1. Canon 400D
2. Nikon D40X
3. Nikon D40
4. Olympus E-410
5. Pentax K100D
1. Price (kit set): 400D: $6,380; D40X: $6,180; D40: $4,980; E-410: $5,980; $K100D: 4,790
2. Ranking of photo quality-daynight: Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Olympus
Nikon's color and sharpness is the best for scenic shooting. Canon is the best for protriat shooting.
3. Ranking of photo quality-night: Pentax has the least noise due to its built in VR system when comparing to other non-VR kit lens. If VR system, the ranking will be the same as point 2.
4. Pixel: 400D: 10.1M, D40X: 10.2M, D40: 6.1M; E-410: 10M; K100D: 6.1M
5. Available accessories/lens: Canon and Nikon win. Others two do not have much choice.
Overall recommendation:
1. If you are looking for quality with expandability , choose D40X or 400D.
2. If you are looking for price value product: K100D or D40.
3. If you change lens frequently and under dusty environment, you will need anti-dust which are Canon and Olympus.
My choice is D40X which is 10M (I consider minimum for DSLR), excellent quality, light weight and lots of accessories. (i.e. value for money, I saw shops in Mongkok selling at approx $5,400 for kit set - Hong goods) For zoom len, you can go for AFS 55-200mm VR at $1,980 (which is cheaper considering the quality with VR. Someone will recommend 18-200mm VR, however, it costs approx. $6,000).
