Shopping or "retail therapy" has been a big part of Melbourne's way of life since the late 19th century, when "doing the Block" was a sign of prestige. Today, the city is home to some of Australia's best shopping strips, such as the famous Chapel Street which stretches many blocks through South Yarra and Prahran, while heritage arcades such as the Block and the Royal Arcade and the CBD's myriad lanes offer a more intimate shopping experience. The large Chadstone Shopping Centre markets itself as the "Fashion Capital". Strip shopping localities include Toorak Village, known for its exclusiveness, and Bridge Road in Richmond, known for its extensive factory outlets.

Royal Arcade is a heritage shopping arcade in Melbourne, Victoria. Melbourne's Golden Mile heritage walk runs through the arcade.
It forms a short, narrow laneway, connecting Little Collins Street to Bourke Street Mall in the central business district of Melbourne. It is also connected to Elizabeth Street in the west, thus, forming a T-shaped arcade.
The arcade, which dates back to 1869, was restored between 2002-04 which resulted in additional natural light and consistency of the shopfronts.
It is a significant Victorian era arcade and is on the Victorian Heritage Register. Along with Melbourne's other arcade, the Block Arcade, and Melbourne's lanes, it is a tourist icon of the city. Royal Arcade is famous for its fashion stores as well as specialty stores such as tarot card reading store.
Originally designed by Charles Webb, the arcade features a high glass roof and windowed stores.
At the south end, the arcade features effigies of mythical figures Gog and Magog and a clock which chimes each hour.


Chadstone Shopping Centre (also known as Chaddy to local residents) in Chadstone, Victoria, Australia is the 3rd largest shopping centre in the southern hemisphere (behind Knox City Shopping Centre and Westfield Southland), with nearly four hundred stores over a lettable area of 132,000 m². [1] It is touted as a "Fashion Capital", as the majority of its vast number of stores are clothing or fashion related.

Chapel Street is one of Melbourne, Australia's best shopping, dining and entertainment precincts. It has a myriad of shops ranging from exclusive upmarket fashion designers at the South Yarra end to old fashion pawnbrokers towards Windsor

It is often compared to Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills, California, United States. It is a popular spot for shoppers and food lovers alike to gather.

Bridge Road is a major shopping strip in Melbourne, Australia. It is most well known for its abundance of clothing factory outlets, which makes it a popular tourist attraction. There are also many stores of up-and-coming local fashion designers. The City of Yarra town hall and Epworth Hospital are also situated on Bridge Road.
