Nowadays, people usually refer "classical music" as music that were composed a long time ago, like in the 18th Century or in the Renaissance period. Modern music, such as songs by Jay Chou, Joey Yung, are considered as "pop music"
However, "classical music" may also mean music of the Classical period in music history. In music history, music can be divided into 4 periods, mainly the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th Century music. Below are some outstanding composers from the four periods:
Baroque: Bach, Handel
Classical: Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart
Romantic: Chopin, Schumann, Tchaikovsky
20th Century: Bartok, Prokofiev
Some renowned pieces include Beethoven's 9 symphonies, Brandenburg Concertos by Bach. If you like piano pieces, try listening to sonatas by Mozart, Beethoven (Moonlight Sonata, Sonata Pathetique), Haydn. For romantic pieces, listen to Chopin's Nocturnes or Liszt's "La Campanella".
I personally like Bartok's "Concerto For Orchestra" because I like the strange rhythms and the tones of the 20th century music. The Six Metamorhposes by Benjamin Britten are also quite nice.
Other nice pieces:
Saint Saens' Danse Macabre
Bizet's Carmen
Tchaikovsy's Sleeping Beauty
Brahm's Hungarian Dance No.5
Grieg's Solveig's Song and Anitra's Dance
Dvorak's Symphony No. 9, "New World"
