1. thrives -- glowing in blossom. It can used to describe something beutiful and good.
eg. The economics in our country is thriving due to the effort put by dealers.

2. outstrip -- overcome , get more than other elses.
eg. Our group can put more mass on the building modle we have made, outstrpping the other groups, and won the Physics competition.

3. pitch in -- To put in a little effort that one could.
eg. Everyone should pitches in to protect the environment and save the world.

4. adorable -- lovely , cute
eg. The adorable pandas Le Le and Ying Ying have arrived in Hong Kong as a gift from the Mainland of China.

5.sedentary -- being used to sitting and do not bother to take a walk.
eg. Nowadays, children are sedentary playing their computer games and watching TV, instead of taking exercise, and that's why British teen obesity is a hard problem.

6.stride -- the length of steps.
eg. I felt that it was like a wind passing by when Mrs Wong walked by me. But when she was far in front, I saw that she was actually walking comfortably. I think maybe she took large strides.

use idioms and phrasal verbs in your writing.
of course use them correctly and appropriately.
there are books out there with composition vocabs in topics.
but i don't see how you could manage to memorize things by topics, since the probably is too low for you to just memorize a few topics.
i'd say idioms are what you should memorize. make your writing sound as native & natural as possible.
