1st, you don't have to wait for the ABS indicator to go off before firing up the engine. No car will require that. The ABS indicator comes on when you start the car or the engine is a step the computer in the car take to make sure the component are functioning. If it stays on, that means your ABS module or component is having issue.

ABS stands for Anti-Lock Braking System. ABS is a safety device implemented to automobiles in the late 70s/early 80s. The tires are the only contact patches the driver have between the car and the road. You only have traction if the tires are rolling. On slippery surface or when the car tried to be stopped from high velocity (large velocity change), the tires' traction may break lose and if the driver keep his foot on the brake pedal the tire/wheel will be locked (wheels and tires don't rotate/roll while the car still moving). Some skillful drivers will pump the brakes, to "unlock" the wheel and tires and let the tires roll and gain traction again and then step on the brake again, and repeat if the tires lock again. However, not all of us are skillful drivers, so the ABS device will actually monitor the rotational speed of individual wheels, and when wheel lock is sensed (rotation speed from one or multiple wheels are different than the other wheels, or different from the vehicle's speed), the ECU or computer of the car will automatically release and pressure the brake. All the driver has to do when trying to stop the car in emergency on slippery condition with ABS is to slam on the brake and turn to the desired direction he wants to. Without ABS, the driver has to pump the brake, detect slippery by himself, and do turn and counter turn of the wheel.
