Both whole blood and fresh frozen plasma are products provided by Red Cross Blood Transfusion Centre. Fresh frozen plasma is the uppermost fraction of whole blood obtained after centrifugation. After centrifugation of fresh whole blood, the plasma fraction is immediately separated and frozen, so as to preserve the coagulation (clotting) factors. Fresh frozen plasma is rich in most coagulation factors, it is transfused to patients who lack of coagulation factors due to massive blood loss, liver disease or warfarin overdose. Fresh frozen plasma is yellow in colour, it is kept under -30C or below and its shelf-life is one year.
Whole blood contains red cell portion and plasma portion of blood. It is exactly the amount of blood donated by the donor. Although the white cell portion, platelet portion and plasma portion are not separated, whole blood is depleted of white cells, platelets, and coagulation factors due to their short life-span. It is used to treat patients with severe anaemia, or massive blood loss in accident or surgery. Whole blood is deep red in colour, it is kept between 2-6C, and its shelf-life is 28 days.
