北京過去是個商業城市，商品經濟非常發達。至今仍有有大量的傳統商鋪。其中有的全中國聞名，甚至進軍了海外市場。著名的京城老字號有：

京劇是地道的中國國粹，深受京城老百姓的喜愛，走在北京的街頭，經常可以聽到路邊傳來抑揚頓挫的京戲段子。京劇的源頭還要追溯到幾種古老的地方戲劇，1790年，安徽的四大地方戲班——三慶班、四喜班、春公班、和春班——先後進京獻藝，獲得空前成功。徽班常與來自湖北的漢調藝人合作演出，於是，一種以徽調「二簧」和漢調「西皮」為主，兼收昆曲、秦腔、梆子等地方戲精華的新劇種誕生了，這就是京劇。在200年的發展歷程中，京劇在唱詞、念白及字韻上越來越北京化，使用的二胡、京胡等樂器，也融合了多個民族的特色，終於成為一種成熟的藝術。京劇集歌唱、舞蹈、武打、音樂、美術、文學於一體，與西方歌劇有類似之處，所以被外國人稱為「Peking Opera」。除京劇外，北京還有雙簧、 相聲、評書、雜技、京韻大鼓等。
