Firstly, most of the soapless detergents are non-biodegradable since they consist of a branched hydrocarbon tail. They cause permanent foaming and kill aquatic lives.
Secondly, decomposition of biodegradable detergent by micro-organisms consumes a large amount of oxygen which may cause insufficient oxygen supply to marine lives and they may die.
Thirdly, many soapy detergents contain phosphate which provides nutrients to algae when being discharged to rivers or sea. It would cause algal bloom. Moreover, decomposition of algae also requires oxygen and will result as reason 2.
