藍牙（Bluetooth），或稱為藍芽，是一種無線個人局部(或區域)網路，最初由易利信創製，後來由藍牙特別興趣組訂定技術標準。據說因為此技術尚在萌芽的階段，故將Bluetooth以「藍芽」的中文譯名在台灣進行商業的註冊，不過在2006年，該組織已將全球中文統一為「藍牙」。

歷史

藍牙技術最初由愛立信創製。1999年5月20日，索尼愛立信、IBM、英特爾、諾基亞及東芝等業界龍頭創立藍牙特別興趣組(SIG,Special Interest Group)，制訂藍芽技術標準。「藍牙」這名稱來自10世紀的丹麥國王哈拉爾德(Harald Gormsson)的外號。出身海盜家庭的哈拉爾德統一了北歐四分五裂的國家，成為維京王國的國王。由於他喜歡吃藍莓，牙齒常常被染成藍色，而獲得「藍牙」的綽號，當時藍莓因為顏色怪異的緣故被認為是不適合食用的東西，因此這位愛嚐新的國王也成為創新與勇於嘗試的象徵。1998年，愛立信公司希望無線通信技術能統一標準而取名「藍芽」。

一隻藍牙滑鼠
現時市面上發售的產品，大多是1.2版本的制式，是一個低用電量的無線電設備，利用一顆低價晶片，完成短距離（1至100公尺）的信息收發。

藍牙用於在不同的設備之間進行無線連接，例如連接電腦和外圍設備，如：印表機、鍵盤等，又或讓個人數碼助理（PDA）與其它附近的PDA或電腦進行通信。目前市面上具備藍芽技術的手機選擇非常豐富，可以連接到電腦、PDA甚至連接到免提聽筒。

事實上，根據已訂立的標準，藍牙可以支持功能更強的長距離通訊，用以構成無線區域網。每個Bluetooth設備可同時維護7個連接。可以將每個設備配置為不斷向附近的設備聲明其存在以便建立連接。另外也可以對二個設備之間的連接進行密碼保護，以防止被其他設備接收。

藍牙的標準是IEEE 802.15.1，藍牙協議工作在無需許可的ISM(Industrial Scientific Medical)頻段的2.45GHz。最高速度可達723.1kb/s。為了避免干擾可能使用2.45GHz的其它協議, 藍牙協議將該頻段劃分成79頻道，(頻寬為1MHZ)每秒的頻道轉換可達1600次。

將藍牙與WiFi對比是不應該的，因為WiFi是一個更加快速的協議，覆蓋範圍更大。雖然兩者使用相同的頻率範圍，但是也需要更加昂貴的硬體。藍牙應該被用來在不同的設備之間創建無線連接，而WiFi是個無線區域網協議。兩者的目的是不同的。

Bluetooth is a radio standard and communications protocol primarily designed for low power consumption, with a short range (power-class-dependent: 1 metre, 10 metres, 100 metres) based on low-cost transceiver microchips in each device.

Bluetooth lets these devices communicate with each other when they are in range. The devices use a radio communications system, so they do not have to be in line of sight of each other, and can even be in other rooms, as long as the received transmission is powerful enough.
