認証 or certification has various meanings.

As mentioned, companies like to claim having obtained certain ISO Certification (e.g. ISO 9000 or ISO 14000) because the ISO series provides an internationally recognised standard attained by the companies concerned. This would give customers confidence in the companies.

而網路上亦有好多要身份認証 is another thing. It is a kind of certifying a person's IDENTITY on the Internet. Since in the cyber world, no body is certain who is who unless there is a robust system in place to check it. This is like having a password when somebody tries to draw money from an ATM, or when you login in the Yahoo! 知識.

oops, I forget to state the benefits in the second case. To " certify " a person's identity has the main advantage of protecting one's property (whether it is cash in one's bank account, or it is the intended use of email or web account).
