Good morning (or afternoon or evening) ladies and gentlement. My name is xxx, I am the first speaker of xxx (name of your school). We are representing the negative team opposing students to carry mobile phones to school.
First of all, students should consider the following three questions before using a mobile phone. "What is it used for? How do you use it? How much do you use?"
If you consider 'What is a mobile phone used for?'. Traditionally a telephone is used to connect with people on the other end, and, a mobile phone can be used to contact others even more conveniently or to make emergency calls. For a full time primary or secondary school student who are at school from 7 o'clock in the morning to 4 o'clock in the afternoon, there should not be any need to call each other on a mobile phone as all their friends should be at school also. In the case of emergency, students can make contact through their teachers during school hours; and they can use the numerous public phones on the street. Evidently mobile phone is not a necessity. In fact, mobile phone is merely a fashion item to students. Prepare for case of emergency is just an excuse for purchase.
In terms of 'How you use it?' Certain students over-utilised the convenience functionality and even use their mobile phones at home rather than their land line. That is a total waste of money. Moreover, it is a time waster as most students uses their mobile phones for chatting or gossipping only, rather than utilising it for their studies.
Lastly, 'How much do you use?' Some people uses their mobile phones for up to three thousand minutes a month. Putting the matter of wastage aside, we also have to consider the possible damage to the brain caused by radiation from mobile phones. Imagine if you have a mini-microwave sitting next to your brain for three thousand minutes a month. What sort of effect will result? Although medical experts have not come to a conlusion as to whether radiation from mobile phones can cause brain cancer or decrease brain functions to this day. It is best to minimise our usage.
Other than the above reasons, the problem with theft at school will inevitably arise. Although mobile phones are becoming cheaper than when it first came out; and new models appears all the time. However, even the most common phones will cost over one thousand dollars. It poses a huge temptation to students who does not have any finantial independence. Look at the problems with monetary theft we currently have at schools.
Moreover, competition is a natural human behaviour, especially amongst young adults. Students will feel inferrior if they sees their classmates using a newer model phone. They are even willing to scrafies on eating and clothing in order to save for buying a new phone. It is not a behaviour that we support.
Even if schools allow their students to bring their mobile phones under the condition that they switches it off during school hours. Will students really obey to this rule? Hardly. They will utilise the vibrating function instead. Will those students be able to concentrate on their school work?
Parents should not be so naive to believe that they will be able to track down their children's movements 24 hours a day if schools allow mobile phones. Children may use this as an excuse to buy a mobile phone, but they will instead waste money on chatting with their friends.
For the various reasons I explained, we oppose to students bringing mobile phones to schools.
Thank you.
