Save Our Earth!

Climate change and global warming have been in international headlines for quite some time. In fact the public discourse has evolved from one between climate change scientists and climate sceptics to one between climate change scientists and climate alarmists. Despite the alarmists’ efforts to jolt the international community by invoking fear, the average Singaporeans have remained none too concerned with the issues.

Singaporeans are too preoccupied with their pursuit of personal hedonistic happiness to care about climate change. In fact many of us do not even know that our climate is characterized by two monsoons!

Our earth is definitely getting warmer. And it has been recently confirmed by the world’s most authoritative group of climate scientists (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) that the heating up is caused almost entirely by human activities. These activities are mainly for the production of goods and services which modern man considers as progress towards the ideal good life.

Mankind seemingly unsatisfiable appetite for raw material, manufactured goods and profits has caused much damage to the natural environment that is now seeking reprisal. A classic example is deforestation which has turned once fertile land into barren desert and also caused floods and landslides.

Another example is the clearing of mangrove swamps to make way for the commercial aquaculture farms. The Asian Boxing Day Tsunami has shown that the profits-motivated clearings of swamps not only destroy the nursery for marine life but also nature’s protection for the coastal regions against large waves.

To slow down the global warming and to save our earth, we need to change our thinking and behaviour. We need to look beyond energy saving and recycling. We should learn to examine our individuals' carbon footprints, and what we can contribute in the fight to preserve the planet's resources.

We must remember that we are part of nature and if nature is in disequilibrium we will also be in disequilibrium ultimately!

Let hope the day forewarned by the wise native American Indians will not arrive for us, “Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish been caught will we realise we cannot eat money.”
