Normally, light from a source may consists of different colours (wavelengths). A spectrometer (光譜儀) is an instrument used to separate the light into its component wavelengths. More sophisticated spectrometers would have the respective intensity of each wavelength band be displayed.
For example, a glass prism is a simple spectrometer. When white light falls onto it, the light is separated into its component wavelengths, ie. the seven colours making up the white light.
