What are the main countries where there are opportunities for teaching English?

Hi, I'm graduating next year from a double major in English/Linguistics. I'm thinking that I just might like to go and teach English overseas somewhere for the experience.

I was wondering, for anyone who might know, what are the major countries in which these opportunities exist? The place that always seems to be mentioned most is China, but I've also heard people mention places in Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia ie. Vietnam, Thailand, South America, etc.

If anyone has some examples I'd appreciate it very much. It's tough to find reliable information on this kind of thing online, I'm always worried since people always say you have to be very careful, a lot of non-reputable organizations out there.

Thanks

You are not qualified to teach on any level in any country. You have neither the temperament nor the personal skills -- and I feel sure your educational background is sorely lacking as well. Give it up and pursue a philistine career for which you are much better suited. Might I suggest janitor?

Japan has a very good program for new teachers overseas. Take look at the website I have provided. There is a lot of information available. It's nice that you'd want to go there - but if I were you, I'd gain some experience in the states first. I have found that living is VERY EXPENSIVE there and your salary might not be what you expect without experience.

The most common places are Japan and China. To teach in Japan, check out JET. I've met people who do that so I'm pretty sure its reputable. I've heard that sometimes you are the example. So you stand in a class where a Japanese teacher is teaching English, and when he wants the students to hear a native speaker say "I like baseball", he uses you. Other times you actually teach.

The best way to teach overseas is to get a teaching credential and a couple of years experience. Then go to one of the Job Fairs held by Search Associates or International Schools Services.

Good Luck.

You dnt have to worry about that. You got enough certificates. Its true go to China its the right time. Browse on the net where you can teach. There's a good university in Hunan they are hiring teacher to teach English and they give u free housing which is very important. The salary is not that much but u can find part time job or private teaching among the rich families. Thailand, very competitive theres a lot of tourists teaching private and part time. But its easy to find. Salary not much. Japan, the same but fair Korea, the same but fair Taiwan, the same but fair

two of my cousins taught in South Korea for two years, they loved it. they both originally signed up for 1 yr contract and renewed at the end for a 5000$ bonus. They made tons of money and got food/housing paid for.
sorry, i don't know which agency they went through.

There are tons of agencies that need help with ESL. Cross cultural solutions could probably help to get you started. A friend went to Korea and taught English, the pay isn't great but the rewards are beyond a cash value. I also know that Cambodia and other places in that area are in need of teachers as well as volunteers for translators. If you look up CCS, as mentioned earlier, they will set you in the right direction.

You wanna look for all mainland European countries I'd say. But my best advice that I can give you is to go where you know the language the best.
