The true and simple answer is that the desire and willingness to be a cop lies within you. I have been a police officer for more than 10 years and have no regrets about my career. However, look deep inside yourself and answer some questions that only you can answer. First, realize that the job is not all glitz and glamour, but in reality a very dangerous occupation. In order to protect and serve, all to often an officer will lay down his life in order to protect someone he or she doesn't know. I am not talking about just knives and guns, but from beatings along the roadside or in the form of an infectious disease contracted from a needle stick from a drug user or even car crashes. The risks are very real. I once read a statistic that stated a police officer is killed every 22 hours. What a shame. I don't know if that statistic has changed. In my career, I have had one friend killed in the line of duty by gunshot, and one nearly killed from a beating with a tire iron.
Next ask yourself if you could actually point a firearm at another human being, pull the triger and end their life. It's not a game, but a sad reality of the job. Some may say "well they were a criminal and deserved it." In truth, they were someones child, someones brother or sister,a father or wife. Somewhere, someone still had hope that they would change and do the right thing. What if it's a kid? It's not just adults and hard criminals weilding guns these days. Whatever the perps affliction or motive, you, being the officer will sooner or later have to make that choice; pull the trigger or not. Could you live with yourself? Realize that other people who you may or may not know, and the lives of other officers will depend on your ability to discharge your weapon in their defense. If you cannot, it may be at the cost of another persons life.
Can you think clearly and make good choices? Others depend on it as much as you will for yourself. All too often, we respond to a call and the sights we see when we arrive burn themselves into our memory. They never fade, and they never go away. Can you stay focused when you arrive at a scene and some guy that is belligerent is yelling " I love her so much," only to go inside and find the "love" splattered all over the walls? At times the sights are horrific, but even so, you must remain in control of your emotions and do your job. Ask yourself if you can.
Although it may seem as if I am trying to discourage you, I am not. I am only trying to get you to ask yourself the deep dark questions that only you can answer. Should you decide that law enforcement is the career choice for you, then welcome to the family, and I wish you the best. Always stay alert and informed. It's the key to success and survival.
