I also face similar situation of "M" forehead and just got a short hair cut this week.

It could clearly see the bald area and it expose all my hair problems, so I sincerely suggest you not to try short hair cut or otherwise you will be really embrassed.

However, I also face problems of having longer hair before and it is so easy to make the hair style messy in windy days.

Losing hair is really big issue to young men nowadays and I truly sympathize your difficulties.
