The news:
New foreign residents meet their MP
AS SINGAPORE gears up for a population of six million, moves are already under way to better integrate into the community the increasing numbers of foreigners making up the population.
About 80 of them, from the Philippines, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Holland, were at the first dialogue session for new residents in a community to meet their Member of Parliament yesterday.
It was organised by the Tampines East Citizens Consultative Committee for new residents - local and foreign - in the Tampines East ward to meet MP for Tampines GRC Mah Bow Tan.
The session, which was followed by a lunch, was attended by about 120 people. The 40 or so Singaporeans at the session were new residents who had moved to the area within the last year.
Mr Mah spent the first half of the hour-long session briefing the audience on the organisational structure of the community and introducing the community leaders for the area.
Ten people rose to the microphone in the question-and-answer session that followed, to share their positive experiences in Tampines or to make requests for a new market, sheltered walkway and more bus routes.
Mr Mah, who oversees the Tampines East ward and who is also the Minister for National Development, had mooted the idea of the dialogue a month ago.
He had found that many of the children in the neighbourhood kindergartens in the area run by the People's Action Party were non-Singaporeans.
He told reporters: 'I wanted to have an opportunity to talk to them and introduce them to our grassroots network and facilities and amenities in Tampines, to make them feel a sense of belonging to Tampines.'
It is one of the many attempts here to integrate foreigners into the community.
Already, the venue for citizenship ceremonies, where new Singaporeans get their citizenship certificates, has been made more localised. They are now held at neighbourhood community clubs, having moved from the larger district-level community development councils.
Before that, such ceremonies, where new citizens take the pledge and sing the national anthem, were held at the immigration department.
And to induct these newcomers into the local culture, some MPs have also held welcome parties for them. One recent event in the Rivervale zone of Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC featured the controversial delicacy, durian, as the main attraction.
Participants at yesterday's dialogue found the session useful and appreciated the gesture in holding it.
Said Dutchman Arjen Blom, 43, who runs a wine business and who has lived in Tampines for seven years: 'It's good to know the avenues of assistance, like the Meet-the-People sessions.
