'are' is used because the thing which it is referring to is plural(more than one)----things
i 'am spending' a lots of money on entertainment and snacks
'am spending' is a present participle which i think that is what you wanted

however, i am (also) buying a lot of Japanese CDs and comics because they 'are' (really) cheap!
the word in brackets could also make your sentences more interesting if you want.
i am 'going' to save my money( thought so i can) buy souvenirs( as well)

you are going to save the money...you are NOT saving it now. because otherwise that wouldn't work with the infinitive after it.
