“棹忌”的“棹”字是指“行舟”之意，即“行船”也; “棹忌”就是出自船上人家--疍家的一個詞語，意即“行船時的忌諱”，蓋因疍家本就是“居住在小船上的水上人”。

(3)起源:

粵俗特信鬼神，此風疍家尤烈，蓋因舟居危險，禁忌多多故也。疍家怕水鬼尋替身，見人溺水每每袖手，不敢搭救；疍家認爲婦女身體污穢，不許婦女跨越船頭；疍家惟恐覆舟，吃魚時那條魚在碟子裏攤著直到兩側魚肉吃光也不可把魚身翻轉；湯匙擱在桌面不可讓匙背朝上……
疍家的諸多禁忌統稱“棹忌”，蓋棹乃行舟同義語也。“棹忌”這一疍家獨創的特殊俗語，爲岸上人所接受，融入粵方言主流，泛指生活中的“不妙”、 “麻煩”、 “糟糕”。
