The MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam, designed by Kazumi Fujita,[1] is a fictional weapon of the anime Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam from the Universal Century timeline of the Gundam metaseries. Its popularity has led to many variations, upgrades, redesigns and influenced later design works such as Zeta Plus[2] and Wing Gundam.[3][4] It is also the only Mobile Suit having a real, pilotable, down-scaled, 7 metre tall, hydraulicly controlled model. built.[5].[6] It is named after the second of the Gundam series Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, sequel of Mobile Suit Gundam and is deployed in the middle of the story as a reinforcement along with the Anaheim Electronics test pilot Roux Louka. The unit was later piloted by the series' main character Kamille Bidan until the end of the series. Zeta Gundam also became the beginning mobile suit of the main character Judau Ashta of the sequel Mobile Suit ZZ Gundam before he switched to using ZZ Gundam. The Zeta Gundam eventually sustained heavy damage and was abandoned at the conclusion of the Neo-Zeon Civil War. The unit has also appeared in most of the Super Robot Wars series, famous for featuring different giant robot mechas of different franchise together in one mixed story, from the first of the series to Super Robot Wars Alpha 3, a total of 26 games excluding remakes. Inside the Gundam Franchise, it has been featured in the PS2 Game Mobile Suit Gundam Z: AEUG vs. Titans, the PSP Game Mobile Suit Gundam: Battle Royale. It is also one of the featured units in the March 2007 release of PS3 game Gundam Warriors(Gundam Musou), a spinoff series of the Koei game Dynasty Warriors.[7][8][9] Three variations are also featured in Gundam Evolve 9.[10] In the SD Gundam manga Double Zeta Kun kokoniari(ダブルゼ-タくんここにあリ, Little Double Zeta is here), Zeta Chan is the main female character, a girl version of Zeta with only the V antenna and the name recognizable.[11]
[edit] Concept
Zeta Gundam is a transform type mecha, it can transform from its normal humanoid outlook to a more aerodynamic style during long distance travel or atmospheric reentry. The shield on the left hand serves as both the nose and the heat shield of the flight unit while the legs become the main thrusters. The concept of the unit is a Tail Binder which serves as the fifth limb of the unit for AMBAC motion. When transformed to its fighter style, it is referred to as the Wave Rider (Later regconized as one of the VMsAWrs Variable Mobile Suit And Wave Rider System series). The concept of a transformable mobile suit(TMS) is used throughout the whole series for enemies' both test units and mass-produced units, the ability of transformation is not unique to the protagonist, and in fact, the main character faced foes with TMS and TMA with the older Gundam Mk-II before switching to Zeta Gundam.
