Gerenal speaking, most of the London hostels are fine and safe. It seems Ace London and Globetrotter Inn are the best in London (in terms of location and tidiness) You can certainly book a room (usually a twin en-suite) just for you and your husband. It then gives you all the privacy! sometime people would prefer hostels rather than staying in a B&B... as it's cheaper and more fun (might meet other people too). But if it's your first time visiting the UK, then maybe B&B is not a bad choice...since you can have a different experience and of course, a nice hearty BIG english breakfast! The choice is really yours :)

Also, apart from hostels and B&B, there are some travelodges which you may consider too. Express by Holiday Inn is quite popular here and it's relatively cheap considering their hotel-standard. Usually they offer around 50-70 pounds PER ROOM (all rooms are ensuite just like hotels) with continental breakfast! All rooms are with contemporary design and very clean and tidy.
