I'm living near San Francisco. San Francisco is cold, wet and windy in winter. Summer time is fine, not humid.
But San Francisco is not that safe everywhere, u need to be careful.
If you can drive, it's safer and more convenience. But you must be really careful in driving. Don't get into accident. You also need to pay for car insurance, parking fee, high price gasoline, buy used camry or honda car(about $3000-5000).
About campus, deAnza college is located in cupertino. Cupertino is a good neighborhood, safe. Housing price is high. A lot of high-income middle class taiwanese lived there. I never studied in DeAnza college, so i don't know the quality or what kind of people studied there, but i know it must be better than Chabot College(Blacks and hispanic) and definitely NOT Laney college in Oakland( lots of Blacks, Hispanic, Vietnamese, Chinese).
Foothill college should be good, because it is located in los alto hills. I've been to Los Altos hills, there's ferrari and bentley car dealer there. The average house price there is around 1.5 million USD, one of the highest in bay area. Their bus is the cleanest I seen, and only white people sit inside, so i assume it is much safer. And it is not a crowded city, so driving there is safer as well.
I know a friend of mind transfer from Chabot College to UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business majoring in either finance or accounting. He is also an international student from Hong Kong, a very smart guy. I personally get into Berkeley's Chemistry. And another friend get into chemical engineering. I think most importantly, UCB look at your GPA first, and for Haas school of business, u do need 3.9 to 4.0 GPA. My friend got 3.95 GPA to get in HSB. And since the program is very competitive, a good GPA is not enough. You better get a good recommendation letter from counselor or teacher. To get a "good" recommendation letter, u should get involve in student activities. For example, my friend is the countroller of student government, present the budget for next year. He is the accounting tutor for tutorial center for almost 2 years, that earn him some money at the same time!. He is also the secretary of international club. His counselor wrote a very long and good recommendation letter for him. I myself is the club council chairperson and I present research papers in American chemical society. So do something related to your studies outside of school, show your passion for the subject. If you don't know any, ask the teacher in community college, don't be afraid, ask more than one teacher. If you work hard and smart, Berkeley's admission office will know.
by the way, i know a guy who is studying economics right now in UCB. He is also from Hong Kong, a very smart guy, get lots of awards in HK. And he said the first two years of stuff learning in community college is very basic! The last two year is much hard. He said the class now show him how labor laws affect unemployment. And there's different models describing it..... He studied till 1 am every night the first semester in UCB. The hard part is not to get in, the hard part is getting out! So prepare to spend long hours study in UCB...... ^.^
my suggestions to anyone wanting to get into any university is to study hard, to improve your reading comprehension skill. There's no easy way or short cut. The last two years in UC, u depend on yourself only. You have to read fast, able to comprehend the materials and able to do the problems at the back. Don't depend on your professor. Either foothill or deAnza college is fine, if u studied well, u will get into UC. Good luck !
