you need to have an international license 3 months or 1 year all ok,
however, it is very dangerous to do so,
in case of accident or insurance.
No matter what, you need to get a DMV temporary license as soon as possible in LA DMV ( Department of Motor Vechicle)
Driving in LA is quite difficult ... :)

if you study here, you are a resident already.... so you are not a visitor ...I recommend you go to DMV to geta REAL CLASS C driver license ... tell them that you are staying in LA,and study in LA ... and you want to drive with full coverage on insurance ...

But,if u are going to stay longer in US . U can apply an US 10yrs International Driving Linces in there. I have a brother in NY , that is what he told me. the price is about 70 us dollars.
