Should smoking be banned in cars carrying children?

Smoking is banned in hotels, bars, stores, malls and most public and government buildings in my state. We seem to be protecting the public, the workers eg. bar workers but still I pull up next to 2 adults in the front seat, both smoking, children in the back seat. Are children owned by their parents? Should the Government try to control this or is it going too far?

I am also in a state in Australia where it is being debated at present.

Everyone riding in cars should were helmets, knee pads, and elbow pads, and maybe we should consider protective vests also. Hell maybe every one should just stay in bed its just to dangerous out there. People are getting hurt and the government isn't doing enough.

The government is being influenced by these radical health nazis who tell me that I can't smoke in a bar, public restaurants, and places I PAY to be in. Who in the world does the government think they are to tell me that I can't smoke in my truck? And if I have kids, who is the government to tell me how to care for them? Since when do the health nazis and the government have control of how I raise my children and what environment to raise them in? That is MY job to look after my kid. It is MY truck because I pay for it. It is MY lungs and if I want to smoke, I carry the costs of my health insurance premiums, not some tree-hugging hippy in California!

To impose ban in cars carrying children.. do you think Government should do that..? Don't we have any responsibility and common sense..? Suppose govt. imposes ban and still they smoke, who is going to complaint regarding that.. so awarness and sensibility in us should let us know that we should not smoke where kids and non-smokers are there around us.

Don't be fooled by the smoking bans
the government has them in place for one reason
they are only in place so they can't be sued
& to get some money from the public who break the law by smoking where they should not
if they were serious they would close the factorys down
cars KILL heaps of people they dont do much about them do they
4000 odd people alone in America die every year in road accidents & for our small country in Australia we lose heaps of people to
then there is the pollution the cars cause & again what is done about that nothing!!!
& no the government is getting to big brother & taking our freedom away

Why not ban it? Using a mobile phone in a car is recognised as a danger to others, and smoking is more so.

Incidentally, reaching for and lighting a cigarette is as distracting as the phone.

i am in australia and people who smoke in their cars with children in them will get hit with a $250 fine

thank god the kids shouldn't have to suffer and with all the education out about the affects of smoking the parents are idiots for teaching their kids how to smoke (monkey see monkey do)
