I was just looking at this | 3 -(5 - 2x) - 4| and was wondering what does it mean when a formula or a set is enclosed between |'s?

This sign means absolute value. In another words, the result that you get from the calculate can only be positive.

It does mean absolute value. This means that whatever the answer is becomes positive. So if the answer was -4 it would become 4.

Means the final answer is just the number regardless of its sign. For example if the final answer is I-3I, you should only consider 3 regardless of its negative sign.
