Where to stay in London?

My husband and I are planning a trip to Europe with London being our first stop. We've been told that we should stay in the West End? Can anyone recommend a nice place ($$ 125-150 a night)? Thank you in advance!

Hi - Yes, West End great but very expensive. You going to pay to be close and in the more desirable west end. My advice would be to check on lastminute.co.uk and see if there any deals, if you want postcodes to search by try W1,WC1,WC2.

If you haven't already found it there is a fantastic website called www.tripadvisor.com. I use it whenever I need a hotel. It gives you reviews by other travellers and tells you how popular it is. Some people even post photos of the place from staying there. You can also book hotels via the site once you've done your research.

I live in London but occasionally stay there overnight. Given the exchange rate of dollar to pound you're going to find it very expensive. Even the flea bitten drug dealer prostitute hotels are going to charge you £50 a night ($100). The average price for a hotel in central London would be £150 - £200 ($300 - $400) a night. The five star hotels such as the Savoy, Claridges etc. charge a minimum of £350 a room ($700).

I hope you find somewhere suitable but may I suggest staying outside the west end and getting a better hotel for your money and travlelling in on the tube?

It's hard to find a nice hotel for that price in London, especially in West End. Try St. David's near Paddington Station (2 blocks away). This hotel is very basic, and I must emphasize "basic". But the place is clean and serves delicious breakfast. Staff are nice. Great location if you are flying into Heathrow because you can take the Heathrow Express train straight to Paddington. The trip takes 15 minutes and £14.50 per person.

The Holiday Inn in Mayfair is a very nice, 4* hotel in the capital's trendiest and most upmarket area- although it will cost you a bit more than $150 a night, it certainly was pleasant for us. We paid £160/n, so thats like $270/n (I think...) hope I helped.

The West End is the tourist and theatre areas of London. Expensive. You may get a hotel there in the price range you are after. Take a look at http://www.visitlondon.com/ to see if they can get you a good deals - they always seem to indicate that they can but don't know anybody who has booked through them. If you don't mind staying in a guesthouse a little out of Central London rather than a hotel in Central London, you might get a better deal. I've used http://www.smoothhound.co.uk/ for guesthouses around the UK and have always found good ones.
