This - 這是 -- 近距離的, 可接觸到 (單數) 所以用 is, this is
These - 這是 -- 近距離的, 可接觸到 (復數, 即超過一個) 所以用 are, these are

That - 那是 -- 遠距離的, 不可接觸到 (單數) 所以用 is, that is
Those - 那是 -- 遠距離的, 不可接觸到 (復數, 即超過一個) 所以用 are, those are

this, that 是單一的, these, those 是指超過一個時才用的.
再者 this 和 these (這或這些) 是指物件或人物是在自己附近的位置.
但 that 和 those (那或那些)是指物件或人物是在自己較遠的位置.
