有許多人都問及：是否有十三星座的存在？或問及“蛇夫座”所代表的意義。其實，在整個天球中，一共有八十八個星座，在黃道中的，並不只十二個星座，也不只十三個星座，嚴格說來，是十四個星座。
除了我們所熟知的十二星座外，另兩個是“鯨魚座”與“蛇夫座”。而這兩個星座，其實在黃道的實際位置上，只占有一小部份，並不像其它的十二個星座，幾乎全部都包含在黃道裡。
其實不管黃道上到底有多少個星座，這個事實一點兒也影響不了占星學的基礎。之前所說的十四個星座，是天文學上實際觀察的現象，與占星學的十二個星座基礎無關。
在天文學上，星座的英文是『CONSTELLATION』，意思是“星座”、“星群”；而占星學中所指的星座是『SIGN』，意思是“記號”、“標記”、“象徵”。
在英漢字典中有這樣的翻譯：『SignsofZodiac黃道十二宮』，在《英漢天文學詞彙》中也有同樣的意譯；而在英英字典中，則詮釋得更詳盡：『Oneofthetwelveequald ivisionsoftheZodiac』，意思是『黃道上十二個均等的部分』。
就“字典”這種對全世界人類那麼重要，而且必需無誤的工具書來說，就把天文學上的星座與占星學上的星座區分得如此清楚，為何天文學家還要來糾正占星學呢？更何況還有“黃道十二宮”的解釋。對占星學而言，較有意義的就只有在黃道上分佈最廣的十二個星座而已。其實“蛇夫座”並不是新發現，在西元二七Ｏ年就已有詩文記載了。

大發雷霆的冥界之王黑地斯說﹕「多麼可怕的事情呀，再這樣下去死者之國將不再會有人。」他很快的向萬神之王宙斯激烈的抗議﹕「人間的命運早已註定，豈可隨意更改，就連神也不容許做出這種事情，更何況他是以人類的身份將死者起死回生，實在是太亂來了。」
宙斯也認為再這樣下去，宇宙的秩序的確會混亂，所以就以閃電殺了阿斯克利弟歐斯，可是以一位醫師來說，他的偉業是不容忽視的，於是宙斯將他加入了星座，就這樣子蛇夫座誕生了。阿斯克利弟歐斯死了之後，更加的受人尊敬了，為他在耶匹它烏魯斯所建的一個神殿，總是有前來求助的病人大排長龍，那些病人到了神殿供養他、祈求他，然後當他們進入睡眠之後，阿斯克利弟歐斯會在他們的夢裡出現，告訴他們的病要如何治好。
變成蛇夫座的阿斯克利弟歐斯雙手裡握著一隻蛇，是因為阿斯克利弟歐斯在他生前常用蛇的毒來當作藥。在地中海的東部一帶，蛇一直是很神聖的動物而且被奉養與尊敬﹔在一個叫做阿斯克利匹翁的醫院裏，不僅是以蛇做成了符咒或巫術，就連蛇的驚嚇療法也曾被使用過，他們相信蛇有很強的生命力，所以跟治療病情有關係，何況冷冷的冬天蛇「死」掉後，「屍體」不會腐爛，到了春天又生龍活虎起來，所以眾人皆認為蛇有「死而復生」的能力，而蛇夫則象徵著掌握「起死回生」的人。

星座就是指天上一些恆星的組合。在三維的宇宙中，這些恆星其實相互間是並沒有實際的關係，只不過它們在天空這一個平面上的位置相近。自古以來人對於排列和形狀都是很敏感的，所以就很自然地把一些位置相近的星聯系起來，組成星座。

基本上，將恆星組成星座是一個隨意的過程，而在不同的文明中都有由不同恆星所組成的不同的星座──雖然某些較顯眼的星的組成在不同文明中都會大致相同，如獵戶座及天蠍座。
國際天文學聯合會用精確的邊界去把全個天空分為八十八個正式的星座，所以天空的每一個方向都是屬於某一特定星座。這些正式的星座大多都以從中世紀傳下來的古希臘傳統星座為基礎。
