灣仔街市落成於1937年，是典型的早期現代建築包浩斯風格(Bauhaus)在香港的代表作，由英國建築師組成的工務局設計。包浩斯學派的理論原則是強調技術與功能﹐與上環街市這類英國風格的建築有很大的分別。包浩斯風格建築之美在於用簡潔的線條和材料來表現外觀造型，沒有多餘的裝飾。灣仔街市的主要的造型元素是橫向長窗和雨蓬所組成的橫線條，窗框的劃分也很有比例。它的入口位於流線型的角上，強調角的流線形，加上屋頂上的欄杆設計，使它更像船形。



灣仔街市只有兩層樓高。牆身結構是由玻璃、磚、混凝土和鋼構架組成。大樓各部份建築構件被模型化，使它旣易於建造，也能滿足內部空間的功能要求。主要的鋼筋混凝土構件都完全暴露，不事修飾。唯一看上去有裝飾意味的是那些為室內空間起防雨遮陽作用的遮陽蓬似的葉片。



灣仔街市大樓幾乎呈開放式平面佈局，只在周邊攤位及中央獨立攤位間設以低矮的隔斷。這種佈局有利於有效地利用空間。大樓外牆巨大的開口和大樓上半部分完全開放的很大的淨空高度營造了一個寬敞的市場空間，在白天不但有極為充份的自然採光，而且自然通風也很好。
