According to some independent testings by overseas websites, Avast should be a better choice because it can detect more virus than AVG.

I have also tried Avast before, and it works well. However, I have not tried AVG, so I have no comment on it.

However, personally I recommend AOL Active Virus Shield:

I am using it right now. It is also a free for home users. It is actually a free version of the famous Lapasky Anti-virus. Certainly it lacks some features provided by the formal Kapasky, but still have some essential functions, like real time shield and email scanning. It also share the same virus signiture as te formal Kapasky, and update every 2 hours! Overall detection rate is also better than Avast and AVG (same as formal Kapasky).

For Active Virus Shield, the 2 major functions being cut off from Kapasky are:1. Web Scanning: scan ALL content of websites before showing in browser;2. proactive defense: to monitor important system areas (registry, system processes) and prevent unauthorised modifications.

The 1st function may be important, as it can block harmful website content. The 2nd function requires the user to have better computer knowledge. Normal users may not know how to use. However, even without the above, the Active Virus Shield is still good enough for most home users already.
