Why the earth pin of a three-pin plug is longer than the other two pins?

This is an electrical safety matter. When an electric appliance plugs into the socket (i.e. the mains supply), the earth connection will always connect first. That means, the metallic frame of the appliance will be connected to earth before it is lived.
