I realize the drawbacks of putting offenders in jails. I used to think that sending criminals to jails is the best way to stop crime. I started to believe that the criminal justice system is able to determine who should be sent to prison and who should not.
I don't think Canada needs to follow the model of Japan or the U.S. to get tougher on crime because I don't see how successful they are. Japanese seems polite and calm to relationships, but I don't think they really understand why they shouldn't commit crime. They are just threatened by the punishment and notoriety of being a criminal. They lack civil education.
Yes I think the system in Canada is working well. I like the lenient part of it. Many people challenge the parole board for being to lenient to criminals but I think this system works better the Japanese one, which asks criminals to write a letter of remorse to show that they regrets for what they've done. It sounds like the system does not require a guilty conscience but whole lots of writing skills.
Of course, criminals in Canada can also lie to the authority by showing how guilty they are, but at least the board would keep an eye on him for some time before giving them a parole. This seems more reasonable to me.
