I have never seen a hdd just burn up, most likely I bet it is the cheesy adapter it is housed in. Why not try another enclosure?

The only other suggestion I can say is to piggy back it to a desktop to see if it powers up and is intact.

If in fact the drive is fried, you will have to get it recovered by many of the "pay per minute" recovery services available on the net. (if there is gotta have, can't loose vital info)

It depends, if its still under warranty then send it to the manufacturer and tell them that you want the data recovered, they will copy everything into a brand new HDD and send it back to you,

If its not under warranty then it needs to be opened... Its better to go to a professional in my openion, if its not that important then you can play around with it, open it, get to know what the internals are... and try to repair it... ask me if you have any further questions...

and last but not the least, if you have fixed it then just blab about to everyone you know....... all the best...
