After 1841, most of the Hongkongers lived in the huts made by the woods or sands, only the wealthy and the govenment officals lived in the small houses made by bricks.

Then after the 1850s, the huts of the people became those made by the bricks of low quality, because many experienced the destruction generated by typhoons. The wealthy and other Europeans lived in the larger houses with 2-3 storeys.

Before the World War II, most of the inhabitants lived in the houses with 3-4 storeys made by cements, and there were also those lived in the large apartments with 4-5 storeys in Central, Tsim Sha Tsui etc.

After the World War II, there were considerable improvements in the building technologies, so that we can live in larger blocks of apartments with 5-6 storeys. Then, the introduction of escalators in the living blocks led to the higher levels of buildings. The 1960s saw the buildings with more than 10 storeys which were mostly private housing.
The 1970s saw the large scale public housing projects in various places. Since then, many of the Hongkongers lived in the public housing estates until now.
