芋老人者，慈水 祝渡人也。獨與嫗居渡口。一日，有書生避雨簷下，衣濕袖單，影乃益瘦。老人延入坐，知從郡城就童子試歸。老人略知書，與語久，命嫗煮芋以進。盡一器，再進，生為之飽，笑曰：「他日不忘老人芋。」雨止，別去。
十餘年，書生用甲第為相國，偶命廚者進芋，輟箸嘆曰：「何向者祝渡老人之芋之香而甘也！」使人訪某夫婦，載以來。
至京，相國曰：「不忘老人芋，今乃煩爾嫗一煮芋也。」已而嫗煮芋進，相國亦輟箸曰：「何向者之香而甘也！」老人前曰：「猶是芋也，而之香且甘者，非調和之有異；相公昔自郡城走數十里，困于雨，不擇食矣；今日堂有煉珍，朝分尚食，張筵列鼎，尚何芋是甘乎？老人猶喜相公之止于芋也。老人老矣，昔聞：城東有甲乙同學，共用一硯，一燈，十窗，一榻，晨起不辨衣履；乙先得舉，登仕途，聞甲落魄，笑不顧，交以絕，是芋視乃友也。更聞某氏，讀書時，願他日得志，為人廉幹忠孝；及為吏，以污賄不飭，罷官，是芋視乃學也。然則世之以今日而忘昔日者，時位之移人也，豈獨一箸間哉！」
老人語畢，相國遽驚，謝曰：「老人知道者！」厚禮而遣之。於是芋老人之名大著。
