Lacrosse is played with a triangular-headed stick with a piece of mesh on the end of it. The mesh is used for catching, throwing and carrying the ball. Played on a field, it is becoming a very popular sport as time goes on.

I would like to ask about the last sentence, why can it begin with a past participle form of the verb "play"? Could you teach me how to use this grammar rule? Please also give me some examples of this grammar rules if possible, thx

I don't know the official name but this is just one way of combining two sentences.

Played on a field, it is becoming a very popular sport as time goes on.

You can separate this sentence into two:
It is played on a field.
It is becoming a very popular sport as time goes on.

By combining them it makes the writing less repetitive and better (not as many "It is").

Another example would be to combine the following sentences:

Peter is stranded in the park.
Peter desperately wants to find his way home.

Stranded in the park, Peter desperately wants to find his way home.

He is an impatient person.
He left for the party without waiting for his sister.

Being an impatient person, he left for the party without waiting for his sister.
