History
The Ocean Park was established on Janurary 10th, 1977. At first the land was offered for free by the Hong Kong government, the structures were sponsored and managed by the Hong Kong Race Association. Just half a year into grand opening, there are already more than 1.31 million visitors. In Janurary of 1979, Ocean Park imported a killer whale name "Hai Wei", it has become one of the main attractions. There were not alot of attractions at the start of Ocean Park. After the 1980s, Ocean Park has undergone major extensions such as adding in giant-sized electrical entertainment. Water Park (1984), Hundred Bird Nest (1986), Shark Aquarium (1989), Red Crane Pond (1991), Peacock Garden (1993), Mountain Life and Old villages are set up in chronological sequence.
Incomes for the early days of Ocean Park come from tickets and funding from HK Race Association. Due to the fact that the tickets were cheap, Ocean Park started out to be losing money. On July 1st, 1987, HK British Government has legilatively passed "Ocean Park Agreement", The HKRA donated 2000million Hong Kong dollar for a trust fund for the Ocean Park and it enables the Park to be independant from the HKRA and thus becomes a non profitable organization. Ocean Park now is responsible for its own gain and loses, and it can run like a normal buiness in terms of management.
