W = Wynn Smith (Fashion)
San Francisco-based designer Wynn Smith (born 1967) constantly betrays his foundness for the well-bred American brat gone decidedly wrong: a Wasp with a sting in the tail is the very model of the Wink girl. Launched in the spring of 1997 and shown in New York ever since, a complicated cross-section of American youth culture is frequently cited in his Wink label - the Manson family, student uprisings, hippies, preppies, grunge, even the Amish get the occasional nod. But it is the society gal gone bad who is ever-present; from Sunny von Bulow to Patty Hearst, at least one is chosen as a 'heronie' for each collection. But it wasn't always this way. Before Wink, Smith actually dressed the well-heeled in his couture-like Wynn line (started in 1995 but discontinued with the advent of Wink) and while catering for private clients in San Francisco. He had previously learned his trade working with Geoffrey Beene in New York in 1987, later studying privately with a tailor in Paris from 1989-90. Furthermore, he was brought up in Arkansas by his ultra lady-like grandmother, Evelyn Smith, who thought it improper for women to wear trousers. In fact, with rigorous attention to cut and detail and homages to designers such as Courreges, Kawakubo and Armani, there is a wit and elegance to the Wink collections which owe as much of a debt to the history of fashion as they do to the history of social unrest.
