If you're full-time student, they will need you to proof you , or somebody closely related to you, will pay for your trip.

So you better get the bank-statement of your parents, or they tax return. Or if you happen to have signifcant assets under your own name, bring that .

If your parents have US visas, better bring that too.

Most of the time, they check your account, but you can use your parents' income statement and bank savings as proof that they will support your trip to USA. Of course you will bring supporting documents to prove that they are your parents.

But most importantly, a school letter to prove that you will still continue to study in that school/Uni, and you will come back to HK at the end of your travels.

You do not need air ticket to apply for a visa.

The application fee is non-refundable, so make sure you are very confident before you submit your visa application.

Sometimes they do examine your bank accounts. But sometimes they do not.
