To the poster above - wrong! It isn't the 1st sound of January at all - try that on someone called Jan and you'd probably receive a punch in the face.
Jan is pronounced as 'Y-An'. It has a Y sound and a heavy A sound. It's an European name so the J isn't the same as that in English.
Oh and it's a BOY'S name, never ever a girl's name!

Um I didn't make myself very clear in my answer - the 'Y' sound I'm referring to is more like a 'ya' sound (so not Y the letter! and if you know German, it's like 'Ja'). So the pronounciation is 'ya-an'
