請問 need 和 need 的分別

你看的《牛津高階》沒有錯，例子也是那樣寫的。
不過，如你所說， need 可以是動詞，也可以是輔助動詞。
你在《牛津高階》看的那段就是 need 作為 model verb 的解釋，你再翻開看一下，裏面是寫著

need1 /ni:d; nid/ modal v

作為普通動詞的 need ，解釋則是在字典的下一段，即 need2 。



作為輔助動詞的 need ，與作為普通動詞的 need 不同。
普通動詞有以下特質：

(1) 根據主詞改變，如：

I need some help.
He needs some help. (有 s)


(2) 配 to + infinitive ，如：

I need to do my homework.


(3) 在問句或否定句中，要加 do 字，如：

Do you need any help?
He does not need to do anything.


作為輔助動詞的 need ，與 must 、 should 、 may 、 can 等相似。
其特質與以上的有明確的分別：

(1) 不會根據主詞改動，如：

He should not leave now. (沒有 s)
He need not go so soon. (沒有 s)


(2) 配 infinitive without to ，如：

I should do my homework. (不是 I should to do my homework.)
I don't think he need go so soon. (不是 I don't think he need to go so soon.)


(3) 在問句或否定句中，不可以加 do 字，如：

Should he leave so soon? (不是 Does he should leave so soon?)
Need he leave so soon? (不是 Does he need leave so soon?)
He need not leave so soon. (不是 He does not need leave so soon)


雖然作為輔助動詞的 need 與 should 等很相似，但是 need 卻通常只用在問句、否定句、或與 if/whether 、 hardly 、 scarely 、 no one 、 only 等連用。

這一點其實就是你要的答案，而且也寫在《牛津高階》的解釋裏，你再翻閱一下就會見到。
不過，當中沒有提到 only ，只是在你提到的那個例句裏有。

其實或許你有留意到，以上 (1) (2) (3) 的例句裏， need 的例子不是問句，就是否定句。
現謹多舉三個例子：

Nothing need be done about this till next week. (留意 need 沒有 s ，而其後也沒有 to 。出自 Cambridge 字典)
Need we take you home?
He need not work today.


你現在明白了，應該可以回答你自己的問題。

I need to send this letter. (沒錯！)
I need send this letter. (錯，不可以用 modal verb 的 need ，因為不是問句、否定句、或類似否定句的句子)

如果句子是否定的就可以，如：

I need not send this letter.

其實你的問題是問need作為本動詞與助動詞的分別:
need作為助動詞時，通常用於否定句或疑問句
如：He need not come.(他不必來)；Why need he come?(為什麼他需要來？) ；I need hardly say that I like you very much.(不用說，我當然非常喜歡你。）
像其他助動詞一樣，作為助動詞的need，即使主詞為第三人稱單數現在時式，也不可加-s ，並且否定形和疑問形也不用do，此外，它後面不接名詞及代名詞，而本身也沒有過去形。
而作為本動詞的need，如主詞為第三人稱單數，need必須加-s，其疑問形和否定形也要用do，而後面則接有to的不定詞。
所以1)與2)只有1)是正確，但為何
If she wants anything, she need only ask.
因為這句的only就如hardly是含有negative的味道，從牛津字典裏英文的解釋Only：solely, and no one, nothing more，我們也可以看到它negative的味道；其實hardly其中一個意思也是：only just
但你的句字”I need send this letter”卻沒有任何否定的副詞出現，所以就不正確，你可以改成”I need sending this letter”或”I need to send this letter”；但若你這句只要加上not成為否定句”I need not send this letter”，那麼在文化上就完全正確，但意卻相反。
